Welcome to the art of Xris Kessler.
Kessler’s early beginnings suggest a fuel for the stimulating and moving work he is creating today. At age 8,
he began drawing and painting as a means of finding a way to escape an isolated existence where his point of
view didn’t match those around him. It is that same inimitable and matchless view that has created a frenzied
whirlwind around Kessler’s art today.
The pivotal point in Kessler’s career came about while he was studying at the esteemed Academy of Art in San
Francisco. Upon seeing the body of work he was producing, two of the school’s most renowned art professors
suggested he leave. Kessler had risen so far above his contemporaries, that additional instruction wasn’t going
to enhance his art. Instead he was asked to travel to Rome and find a mentor.
This was a fortuitous plea, as Kessler admits that his inspiration comes from reading Divinci’s notebooks while
simultaneously admiring Warhol’s brilliance. As a contemporary artist, Kessler also finds his muses in the “pop
art” of modern culture, film and music. Whether it is a series of songs by The Cure, the work of David Lynch or
John Cameron Mitchell, Kessler can find an inner movement that makes its way onto his canvas, the unformed
bronze or a blank piece of paper.
Comfortable and accomplished in all mediums, Kessler’s true brilliance shines in his paintings that give the
viewer a glimpse into his world, one that is simultaneously uncommon and awe-inspiring.
Currently commissioned to complete seven murals for Beth Israel hospital in New York, Kessler’s work is
gaining international attention and recognition for its exquisite color, composition and the sensation it gives
the viewer.
